Fast solution of Cahn-Hilliard variational inequalities using implicit time discretization and finite elements

We consider the e�cient solution of the Cahn-Hilliard variational inequality using an implicit time discretization, which is formulated as an optimal control problem with pointwise constraints on the control. By applying a semi-smooth Newton method combined with a Moreau-Yosida regularization technique for handling the control constraints we show superlinear convergence in function space. At the heart of this method lies the solution of large and sparse linear systems for which we propose the use of preconditioned Krylov subspace solvers using an e�ective Schur complement approximation. Numerical results illustrate the competitiveness of this approach

How Student-Led Goal Setting and Self-Monitoring of Progress Impacts SelfEfficacy Among Third Graders at an International School in Eastern Europe

This capstone explored how student goal setting and self-monitoring of progress impacted the self-efficacy of twenty third-grade students at an international school in Eastern Europe. Pre- and post-study data included an attitudinal survey to document levels of self-efficacy, student-created goals, and one-on-one interviews with six students. For a ten-week period, the participants monitored their academic progress towards meeting their goals on a biweekly basis. The findings suggested that student-led goal setting improved students’ overall levels of self-efficacy, as the students were better able to identify positive academic behaviors, address academic concerns, create plans to resolve specific challenges, and identify new learning opportunities

Fast Solvers for Cahn-Hilliard Inpainting

We consider the efficient solution of the modified Cahn-Hilliard equation for binary image inpainting using convexity splitting, which allows an unconditionally gradient stable time-discretization scheme. We look at a double-well as well as a double obstacle potential. For the latter we get a nonlinear system for which we apply a semi-smooth Newton method combined with a Moreau-Yosida regularization technique. At the heart of both methods lies the solution of large and sparse linear systems. We introduce and study block-triangular preconditioners using an efficient and easy to apply Schur complement approximation. Numerical results indicate that our preconditioners work very well for both problems and show that qualitatively better results can be obtained using the double obstacle potential

Kleine Schritte ganz gross - Valide Verlaufsassessments für Kinder mit schweren, erworbenen Hirnverletzungen (Wachkoma) : Ein systematisches Review

Darstellung des Themas: Assessments, als Instrumente zur Verlaufsbeobachtung, spielen eine zentrale Rolle in der Behandlung von Patienten mit schweren, erworbenen Hirnverletzungen und daraus resultierendem Wachkoma. Im Gegensatz zu Assessments für Erwachsene müssen Assessments für Kinder den Entwicklungsstand und dementsprechend noch nicht ausgebildete Fähigkeiten miteinbeziehen. Ziel: Ziel ist, eine allgemeine Empfehlung für die Praxis zur Anwendung valider Verlaufsassessments bei Kindern mit schweren, erworbenen Hirnverletzungen. Die ergotherapeutische Anwendung davon wird diskutiert. Methode: Durch eine systematische Literaturrecherche nach Guba (2007) wurden validierte, internationale und interprofessionelle Assessments eingeschlossen, die zur Verlaufsbeobachtung von Kinder mit schweren, erworbenen Hirnverletzungen im Wachkoma oder Minimally Conscious State verwendet werden können. Die Validierungsstudien wurden nach Validität, Reliabilität und Inhalt des Assessments kritisch beurteilt. Relevante Ergebnisse: 10 von 26 gefundenen Assessments entsprachen den Einschlusskriterien. Es wurden fünf Assessments zur Erfassung des Bewusstseinzustandes und fünf Assessments zur Erfassung der Funktion gefunden. Schlussfolgerung: Eine Mehrheit der gefundenen Assessments kann minimale Veränderungen des Bewusstseinszustands nur ungenügend differenzieren. Das PALOC-s (Eilander et al., 2009) ist geeignet zur Verlaufsbeobachtung des Bewusstseinszustandes, das PCANS (Soo, Tate, Williams, Waddingham & Waugh, 2008) wird empfohlen zur Verlaufsbeobachtung der Funktion. Für die ergotherapeutisch relevante Erfassung bedeutungsvoller Aktivitäten werden zusätzliche Assessments empfohlen

C'est ainsi que les aventures du protagoniste du roman peuvent se poursuivre en suivant une autre pente. le développement narratif est condensé dans toutes les versions latines, considérées comme des traductions supposées d'une version originale grecque. C'est en France toutefois que le roman eut le plus grand succès, car parmi les traductions en langues vernaculaires se trouvent aussi huit versions françaises.
